When Mazda does something new, they take the time to do it right. With the debut of the first ever all-electric Mazda, you can bet the wait will be worth it. The new 2022 Mazda MX-30 will arrive in California first later in 2021, with a full roll-out planned for next year. A Mazda MX-30 Plug-In Hybrid EV will also join the Mazda lineup later next year.
The 2022 Mazda MX-30 is built on an all-new electric powertrain from Mazda with 144 horsepower and up to 200 lb-ft of torque. Using a 35.5 kWh lithium-ion battery, the new Mazda MX-30 can charge up to 80% in just 36 minutes*, using DC fast charging. Mazda is enhancing its Skyactiv-Vehicle Architecture to provide the superior driving dynamics you expect from Mazda but with even better handling and performance.
In addition to the battery-electric Mazda MX-30, there will be a plug-in hybrid Mazda MX-30, using Mazda’s iconic rotary technology. Mazda enthusiasts will be excited to see the rotary engine return to Mazda’s lineup for the first time in over 10 years. For the Mazda MX-30 Plug-In Hybrid EV, the rotary will act as a generator for the electric battery. Later on, Mazda plans to introduce a traditional hybrid Mazda MX-30 for the American market.
What may be most innovative about the upcoming Mazda MX-30 is its interior. Mazda follows its KODO design philosophy with clean lines, minimalist and sophisticated style now with more sustainable materials, including cork, recycled fabrics and recycled bottles. Cork plays an integral part in the history of Mazda. Mazda originally began business as a cork manufacturing plant before moving into automotive. Cork is also one of the most eco-friendly, sustainable materials you can find.
The modern interior is open and airy thanks to pillar-less, freestyle doors for a more open, versatile experience. A floating center console features an electronic shifter, physical command dial for the Mazda infotainment system and smart storage spaces underneath. The new Mazda MX-30 gets a 7-inch touchscreen with tactile buttons to make using the system easier and less distracting. Connect the new Mazda MX-30 to the Mazda Connected Services app to remotely control climate control, lock/unlock doors, monitor the battery level and more.
The 2022 Mazda MX-30 seats five adults comfortably, with the carriage doors offering easier access to the rear seats. Since the electric battery is housed under the floor, you’ll still get ample cargo room. Similar in shape and style to the 2021 Mazda CX-30, the new Mazda MX-30 features an elegant floating roof, satin chrome accents and is slightly shorter.
There aren’t yet figures for the battery range in the all-electric Mazda MX-30, but with Mazda’s first electric vehicle set to debut in California fall 2021, we’ll soon know firsthand. That means it will also qualify for the $7,500 Federal Tax Rebate for EVs as well as California’s CA Clean Fuel Reward of up to $1,500**.
